Drop-leaf gateleg tables became a household staple during the 18th and 19th centuries because of their versatility in smaller homes. By the Victorian era, American cabinetmakers commonly produced walnut examples with turned legs and brass casters, allowing families to expand the table for meals or gatherings and fold it away afterward. Their practical design and enduring craftsmanship continue to make them highly desirable antiques today.
