Nataraja, meaning “Lord of the Dance,” is one of the most recognizable representations of Shiva in Indian art. Shiva's dance is traditionally depicted within a flaming aureole and symbolizes the continuous cosmic cycles of creation, preservation and destruction. Bronze Nataraja figures have been produced in India for centuries, with early South Indian examples becoming especially celebrated. The exact age and origin of this example have not been independently authenticated.
