Description :
Charming vintage figural coin bank featuring a stylized young woman constructed in classic mid-century Scandinavian Modern fashion. The figure has a beautifully turned warm brown wood body and head, minimalist hand-painted facial features, rope arms, long blonde fiber hair tied back with ribbon, and a blue felt front pocket/apron with contrasting white details. The underside contains the original metal locking coin-access mechanism stamped “FOREIGN.” The combination of turned wood, simple geometric form, rope detailing and whimsical character design is strongly associated with Scandinavian decorative objects of the 1960s–1970s. Exact maker and country of manufacture have not been confirmed. Approx. Measurements Condition Historical Note Est. Value
Approx. 9–12 in. tall
Good vintage condition with age-related wear. Hair shows some tangling/frizzing and the ribbon and felt exhibit age consistent with an older decorative piece. Wood retains an attractive warm patina. Original metal bank mechanism remains present underneath. Key is not shown and operation of lock has not been confirmed.
Scandinavian designers and manufacturers produced numerous whimsical teak and turned-wood figures during the postwar Mid-Century Modern period. Danish examples from the 1960s are documented with similar combinations of teak construction, rope arms and simplified character forms, and figural Danish money banks were also produced during this period. 1stDibs This example's “FOREIGN” marking indicates an export-market piece but isn't sufficient by itself to establish Danish manufacture. Because I couldn't locate a documented identical example, I would not attribute it to Hans Bølling or another named designer without further evidence.
