Description :
Wonderful vintage Japanese cast iron pagoda lantern featuring a dramatically flared roof, pierced lattice sides, three-footed base and hinged side door for inserting a small candle. A wire loop at the top allows it to be carried or hung. Heavy, sculptural construction with a beautifully aged dark brown surface and substantial natural patina. Approx. Measurements Condition Historical Note Est. Value
Approx. 8–12 in. tall, excluding hanging loop
Approx. 6–9 in. wide
Good antique/vintage condition with extensive surface oxidation, rust, patina and age-related wear throughout. Hinged door is present. No obvious major breaks visible in the photos. Its weathered surface is part of its aged character.
This form is associated with traditional Japanese garden and temple lantern architecture and was adapted into smaller cast-iron candle lanterns during the early-to-mid 20th century. Your lantern appears extremely similar to examples currently being marketed as 1940s Japanese cast iron pagoda lanterns. The comparable asking prices you found of approximately 375–499 are notable, although asking prices don't necessarily represent actual sale prices.
