Description :

Antique C. L. Lane Firkin Sugar Bucket with Needlepoint Lid

This antique wooden firkin sugar bucket was produced by C. L. Lane Co. of East Swanzey, New Hampshire, a well-known American manufacturer of finely crafted wooden containers established in the mid-19th century. The bucket features classic stave construction with metal banding and an original swing handle, embodying traditional Shaker-inspired utilitarian design.

The lid is topped with a needlepoint upholstered insert, a decorative adaptation commonly added in the early to mid-20th century when firkins were repurposed for household use beyond food storage. The interior retains its wooden construction, while the original C. L. Lane Co. manufacturer tag remains attached, confirming authenticity and origin.

Originally intended for storing sugar or dry goods, firkins like this were also widely used as lunch pails by farm and mill workers in New England prior to WWII. Today, C. L. Lane firkins are highly collectible for their craftsmanship, history, and decorative appeal.

Historical Note:
C. L. Lane Co. was founded in 1856 and became one of New England’s most respected makers of wooden household containers, including firkins, sugar buckets, and lunch pails. Their products are valued for durability, clean construction, and enduring American folk craftsmanship.

Value Context:
Authentic C. L. Lane firkin sugar buckets with original tags and decorative lids are increasingly scarce and sought after by collectors of Americana, early utilitarian wares, and folk décor.
