Historical Note: Fred Machetanz (1908-2002) was one of Alaska’s most celebrated 20th-century artists, known for luminous depictions of Arctic wildlife, sled dogs, Indigenous Alaskan subjects and northern landscapes. His distinctive palette often emphasized intense blues against warmly illuminated animals, a technique especially effective in his polar bear imagery. “Nanook” dates to 1983 and this example is a pencil-signed and numbered 928/950 limited edition retaining its original Mill Pond Press presentation material.
