Description :

Rare 19th Century German Tramp Art Carved Wooden Box with Brass Lion Head Pulls

Rare antique carved wooden box attributed to late 19th century German folk craftsmanship, commonly associated with Tramp Art traditions. This box is constructed from layered and chip-carved wood featuring geometric, notched relief patterns throughout the lid and body, showcasing the labor-intensive handwork characteristic of the period. The exterior is finished in warm brown tones with contrasting darker bands, enhancing the depth and dimensionality of the carving.

The front is fitted with decorative brass lion head pulls, a classical motif frequently used in European decorative objects of the era, adding both visual weight and functional detail. The lid features a raised, stepped geometric design, reinforcing the architectural quality typical of Tramp Art and Black Forest–influenced folk objects. The interior appears unlined, consistent with utilitarian storage boxes intended for personal effects, documents, or valuables.

Boxes of this quality were often handmade using reclaimed wood, making each example unique. Surviving examples with intact carving, original hardware, and strong visual presence are increasingly scarce and highly collectible.

Dimensions: Approx. 10.6" W x 6.7" D x 5.5" H

Condition: Very good antique condition with light wear consistent with age and use. Minor surface wear, small edge softening, and natural patina to the wood and brass hardware. No major cracks, losses, or structural issues observed. Hardware remains intact and secure. Please review photos for full condition details.

Notes: A strong decorative and collectible example suitable for display in folk art, Tramp Art, primitive, or antique interiors. Comparable examples with similar carving depth and original brass fittings appear infrequently on the market.

Estimated Value: $600–$1000
