Description :

Italian Marble and Banded Onyx Chess Set with Carved Stone Pieces

Carved stone chess set featuring a polished marble and banded onyx game board paired with matching sculptural chess pieces. The board displays alternating squares of softly veined marble and layered onyx in muted blush, cream, gray, and green tones, framed by a solid stone border. The substantial carved pieces mirror the board’s material palette, with one side rendered in warm rose-toned stone and the opposing side in cool gray stone.

The chess pieces are stylized and architectural in form, reflecting mid-century Italian decorative stonework where natural material and sculptural presence were emphasized over strict figurative detail. The weight and density of the stone give the set a strong tactile quality, making it suitable for both active play and decorative display.

Type: Chess set with board and full carved stone pieces
Style: Mid-century modern / classical revival
Material: Marble and banded onyx
Origin: Likely Italy
Estimated Era: Mid-20th century
Condition: Very good vintage condition with light surface wear consistent with age; no visible cracks or repairs observed except on one chess piece but not noticable

Approximate Measurements:
Board approximately 13.5–14 inches square × 0.75–1 inch thick

Historical Note:
Italy has long been a center for decorative stone carving, particularly in marble and onyx, with chess sets becoming popular export items in the mid-20th century. These sets were often produced for the luxury home décor market, combining traditional games with sculptural materials and modernist design sensibilities.

Value Context:
Comparable Italian marble and onyx chess sets typically sell in the $125–250 range depending on stone quality, condition, and completeness, with well-preserved examples often exceeding original auction estimates.
